Overview

Elizabeth Wieters is an associate in the Charleston office. Originally from Greenville, SC, Ms. Wieters attended The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, where she earned a B.A. in Political Science. During undergrad she interned in the Scottish Parliament for the former Minister of Finance. She received her J.D. from the Charleston School of Law in 2009. While in law school, she served as the Articles Editor for Federal Courts Law Review and as the Development Editor for MALABU, the Maritime Law Bulletin.

Ms. Wieters has been working in the legal industry in the Lowcountry since 2005. She served as law clerk to the Honorable Steven H. John while he was Chief Administrative Judge for the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit of South Carolina and as an intern to the Honorable David C. Norton in United States District Court for the District of South Carolina.  Prior to joining HBS, Ms. Wieters practiced in commercial and business litigation, corporate formation, and estate planning.

Ms. Wieters’ practice is centered upon insurance defense and surety law, specifically in the construction context. She has tried cases and received defense verdicts and also has experience in alternative dispute resolution, participating in numerous mediations. Mrs. Wieters represents insurance carriers in coverage determination matters, including evaluating coverage for carriers before a lawsuit is filed.  Ms. Wieters represents general contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, owners, and design professionals in construction litigation. She has handled various types of construction matters, including defect lawsuits, payment claims, personal injury in the construction context, and surety defense. She has been involved in all phases of resolving construction conflicts, from pre-suit payment dispute workouts to alternative dispute resolution of multiparty, complex construction defect litigation. Ms. Wieters has experience in surety law, defending surety bonds on payment and performance claims in the context of construction defect litigation. Her practice also includes representation of homeowners associations in preparing their governing documents and providing a defense in the construction litigation arena.
