Practicing in Hall Booth Smith's Charleston office, Derek's practice and experience includes, among other things, defending: 
  • Architects, engineers and contractors in design and construction defect litigation; 
  • Product manufacturers in product defect litigation, including serving as South Carolina litigation counsel for an international exterior cladding manufacturer;
  • Medical professionals in malpractice litigation; 
  • Businesses of various sizes in personal injury litigation; and
  • Employers in Title VII harassment, retaliation and discrimination litigation.
Derek is AV® Preeminent™ Peer Review Rated by Martindale-Hubbell, the highest rating category that organization provides for legal knowledge, communication skills and ethical standards.  He is actively involved in the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys Association, and currently serves as the Vice President of its young lawyers division. Moreover, Derek recently completed a comprehensive, year-long leadership program provided by the Charleston Chamber of Commerce.  Before joining Hall Booth Smith in 2016, Derek was the lead full-time lawyer in the Charleston office of a South Carolina litigation firm.
Derek earned his Juris Doctor from the Charleston School of Law, where he received the CALI Award for excellence in Legal Research and Writing, and his undergraduate degree from Wofford College. While at Wofford, Derek was a scholarship member of Wofford’s football team, a two-year starter at outside linebacker, an Academic All-American Nominee, and a four-time Academic All Southern Conference performer.
Derek was born near St. Louis, Missouri, and claims it as his hometown; however, he grew up in Denver, Colorado; Shreveport, Louisiana; Lake Charles, Louisiana; and Austin, Texas.  He now lives in Charleston with his wife, Erin, and young sons, Dawson and Mac. In his free time, Derek enjoys surfing, live music and watching or attending sporting events of all kinds.
