Overview

Payton D. Bramlett is an associate in the Atlanta office of Hall Booth Smith. He received his bachelor degree in Business Administration, Risk Management and Insurance from the University of Georgia. During his time at the University of Georgia, Payton served as the Chair of the Arch Society, President of the Insurance Society, and was one of only fourteen seniors named as an Outstanding Senior Leader by the Pandora Yearbook.  
Payton then received his J.D. from The University of Mississippi School of Law. While in law school, he was elected by his peers as Best Advocate; served as the managing editor of the Mississippi Sports Law Review; and received the associate dean's Outstanding Student Award.  Payton also served as a student representative on the advisory board of the John Grisham Law Library. After law school, Payton clerked for Judge Amanda H. Mercier.   
As an Eagle Scout, Payton spent many summers of his youth at Philmont in northeastern New Mexico, directing the Boy Scouts of America's National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience.  Payton is also a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow, served as Lodge Chief of the Mowogo Lodge, and served on the training staff at numerous National Order of the Arrow Conferences.

Practice Areas

General Liability

Payton has extensive experience in general liability cases because the vast majority of his legal career has been spent in insurance defense.  Throughout his career, Payton has secured favorable results for clients in both bench and jury trials in some of the most plaintiff-friendly jurisdictions in Georgia.  Payton began his legal career defending automobile and premises liability cases.  Most recently, Payton served as both national and local counsel for a Fortune 200 company in a series of complex toxic tort cases and also defended attorneys in professional malpractice cases.

Insurance Coverage

Payton has experience in rendering coverage opinions—most often in the context of whether or not insurers are required to liberalize a policy's limits issued in another state to meet state minimum limits in another state where a loss occurs when the policy lacks a liberalization clause.

Transportation

Payton is experienced in handling various types of transportation litigation including aviation and trucking cases.  In private practice, Payton has defended numerous trucking companies and their drivers in both civil and criminal litigation.  During law school, Payton served as a legal intern for the Regional Counsel for the Federal Aviation Administration in Chicago, Illinois.  In that role, In that role, Payton assisted with the O'Hare Modernization Program; pilot disciplinary actions including license revocations; hazardous materials violations; and civilian actions for alleged violations of federal aviation regulations with an emphasis on laser pointer infractions.  Payton also spearheaded a major research initiative on federal preemption of a Chicago Municipal Ordinance regarding aircraft banner advertisements in airspace over the City of Chicago.
