Erin Young is a partner in the Charlotte office of Hall Booth Smith. Ms. Young has over 17 years’ experience representing healthcare providers, corporations, non-profit organizations, and insurance companies in litigation involving claims of professional negligence and general liability. Before joining HBS, Ms. Young was Partner for over 9 years at a defense litigation firm, where she developed and managed all aspects of litigation including investigation, discovery, pre-trial motions and jury trials. She has also advised clients on issues of long-term risk management and loss prevention. In addition to her vast experience defending health care providers in medical malpractice claims, Ms. Young also has substantial experience defending dentists in claims of dental malpractice, negligent hiring, and supervision.  Ms. Young has also represented her clients before various licensing boards including the North Carolina Boards of Nursing and Medicine.

Ms. Young received her B.A., in English and Political Science, from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She attended the University of North Carolina School of Law for her J.D. Ms. Young was a 2015 Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Woman of the Year Candidate and recognized as a North Carolina Super Lawyers “Rising Star” in 2012 and 2013. Ms. Young also serves as an instructor for the National Institute of Trial Advocacy’s (NITA) Building Trial Skills program in Boulder, Colorado.  NITA is the nation’s leading provider of legal advocacy skills training.  As a member of the faculty, Ms. Young helps to train and mentor other lawyers in the development of their trial advocacy skills.

EXPERIENCE

Professional Liability:

  • Obtained a defense verdict for an urgent care facility in a wrongful death action in which plaintiff alleged that the treating physician negligently misdiagnosed an acute coronary syndrome
  • Obtained a defense verdict for a North Carolina dental practice in which plaintiff alleged a failure to diagnose an infection
  • Represent multiple health care providers, including hospitals, physicians, and dentists, in all phases of litigation and in disciplinary actions before licensing boards
  • Obtained dismissal of a mental health services company in a federal court matter in which plaintiff alleged harassment and discrimination

General Liability

  • Extensive experience defending business owners and individuals in claims of premises liability including allegations of inadequate security and negligent hiring/training/retention
  • Obtained summary judgment on behalf of a local property owner in a dram shop liability action
  • Successfully represented a national women’s sorority in litigation involving  hazing and other prohibited conduct including advising the organization on disciplinary issues and local chapter operations
  • Provides corporate clients and individuals with risk assessment and loss prevention strategies to minimize potential litigation
