Veteran South Carolina Trial Lawyer Named Managing Partner of Hall Booth Smith’s South Carolina Office

Hall Booth Smith, P.C. is pleased to announce Joseph D. “Trey” Thompson, III, a 29-year trial lawyer, has been named managing partner of its South Carolina office. Thompson joined the firm as partner in 2014 and has spent his career helping clients move cases toward resolution at mediation, avoiding costly litigation.

Thompson concentrates his practice on transportation and general liability defense, including catastrophic injury and high-risk exposure cases. He has tried more than 100 cases to verdict in South Carolina state and federal courts, including arguing cases before the South Carolina Court of Appeals and the South Carolina Supreme Court.

As one of the longest-serving partners in Hall Booth Smith’s South Carolina office, Thompson has provided mentorship to newer attorneys and colleagues, and is widely respected for his direct communication and leadership style.

“In my view, teambuilding and management have to be founded on mutual trust and respect,” he said. “For example, I respect and trust Founding Partner John Hall, and if he says we’re going to open an office in Timbuktu, I am going to be on board because his leadership and track record warrant trust and respect.”

Before joining Hall Booth Smith in 2014, Thompson was a partner at Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd, P.A. in Charleston.

As a first-chair trial attorney, Thompson has demonstrated exceptional strategic planning, expert execution, communication, and decisiveness, and values vision and direction as demonstrated by Hall, who has successfully shepherded the firm’s unprecedented growth, both in attorney count and market share.

“Trey’s tenure with the firm and as a successful trial attorney provide us with invaluable insight and leadership, providing exceptional benefit to our clients,” Hall said. “His connections to the South Carolina business and legal communities will further bolster our collective expertise across the state and with teams serving clients across the Southeast.”

Thompson has been named a Best Lawyers in America® in personal injury litigation – defendants since 2013, and in 2019, was named Charleston’s “Lawyer of the Year” in the category.

He is an active member of the South Carolina Bar and the Charleston County Bar Association. He is a past board member of the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys Association.

Thompson received his bachelor’s degree in financial management from Clemson University and his law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law.
