HBS is proud to announce Charleston Partner Derek M. Newberry and Attorney M. Shanter Chaparro have been recognized on the Super Lawyers 2024 South Carolina Rising Stars List for their experience in Construction Litigation matters.

The Recipients

Derek M. Newberrry

Derek’s practice encompasses the full spectrum of construction defect, professional malpractice, medical malpractice, product defect, personal injury, wrongful death, and property damage litigation. He defends design professionals (architects, structural engineers, civil engineers, mechanical engineers, and geotechnical engineers), contractors (both general contractors and subcontractors), and product manufacturers in complex, multi-party and class-action design, construction, and construction material defect litigation in both state and federal courts.

His experience includes litigation arising from civil infrastructure projects, commercial projects, and residential projects ranging in size and complexity, including resolving numerous cases in which alleged damages exceeded $25,000,000.

M. Shanter Chaparro

Shanter’s practice focuses on a broad range of business litigation, construction defect, personal injury, product defect, and general liability matters. His knowledge of the construction industry and business combined have allowed him to develop and implement litigation strategies that continuously deliver results aligned with his clients’ goals.

Prior to joining HBS, Shanter represented contractors and developers in complex construction defect litigation, including large multi-family and class action construction defect cases at a boutique law firm in Charleston. He also routinely represented other construction clients in premises liability, personal injury, and mechanic’s lien cases.
