Steve Coles Joins Hall Booth Smith as of Counsel

Hall Booth Smith, P.C. is pleased to announce Stephen W. Coles has joined the firm as of counsel in Charlotte. Coles is an experienced litigator who has served as lead counsel on more than 200 medical-related matters, representing physicians, nurses, hospitals, assisted living facilities and manufacturers. He specializes on cases involving pharmaceuticals, transplants, bone marrow harvesting, medical staff issues, informed consent, medical devices, mental health commitment, peer review, contracts, ethics and other matters.
He also has an active premises liability and insurance coverage practice, having tried more than 100 jury trials in medical injury, personal injury, general insurance defense, product defects, liability, commercial disputes, contracts, employment, workers’ compensation, construction, eminent domain and will caveats.
Coles has conducted hundreds of depositions of parties in lawsuits and more than 500 depositions of expert witnesses on topics including insurance coverage, accounting, banking, life care plans, accident reconstruction, ballistics, arson, genetics, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, pediatrics, a broad array of surgeries and medical procedures, and emergency medical care.

With nearly four decades of litigation experience, Coles has been listed in Best Lawyers in America for civil litigation since 1999. He served as the Davidson County and Lexington City School Board attorney for more than 20 years, and has counseled on the merger of school boards, policy generation, funding disputes, student conduct issues, teacher tenure and dismissal, First Amendment issues, liability, and law enforcement and public safety matters. Coles also served as interim County Attorney for Guilford County while assisting in the selection and hiring of a full-time in-house counsel.
Coles holds a bachelor of arts degree from Wake Forest University, and earned a juris doctor from Wake Forest University School of Law.
In addition to his work as an attorney, Coles is a past president of the Wake Forest Alumni Association, Co-Chair of the NC Bar Association Tort Issues Task Force, Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel, Defense Research and Trial Lawyers Association and past Director of the North Carolina Museum of Art.
