HBS Attorney Named Chairman of Georgia Government Transparency and Campaign Finance Commission

Hall Booth Smith, P.C., (HBS) would like to congratulate Kevin D. Abernethy on being selected the Chairman of the Georgia Government Transparency and Campaign Finance Commission (f/k/a the Ethics Commission).  As Chairman, he will lead this quasi-judicial body that has statewide jurisdiction over ethical issues involving public officials, lobbyists, and state vendors.

Georgia Lt. Governor Casey Cagle appointed Mr. Abernethy to serve a four year term on the Georgia Government Transparency and Campaign Finance Commission in 2010.  Mr. Abernethy has a long history of serving the State of Georgia.  Before entering law school, he served as a legislative aide in the Georgia State Senate to the chairman of the committee on Natural Resources and the chairman of Appropriations.  In 2010, Governor Sonny Perdue appointed Mr. Abernethy to a three-year term to the board of the Superior Court Clerks Retirement Fund of Georgia, a position with fiduciary responsibility and oversight over a multimillion dollar portfolio.

Mr. Abernethy is an attorney in the Atlanta office of HBS and has a practice that concentrates on high exposure cases.  He has extensive litigation experience in both Georgia and Tennessee and is licensed in both these jurisdictions.  He has handled civil rights claims for the City of Atlanta, large complex environmental lawsuits, corporate suits, and claims involving professional negligence.

Mr. Abernethy attended the University of Georgia where he served as student body president and was selected as a member of Pi Sigma Alpha National Honor Society and Omicron Delta Kappa.  He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1999 with a B.A. in Political Science.  Mr. Abernethy earned his Juris Doctorate from the Georgia State University College of Law.  While in law school, he earned honors recognition for his work in a mock trial litigation course and received a CALI Excellence for the Future Award for his academic performance in Interview Counseling & Negotiation.
