Chlo’e L. Thornton
Biography
Chlo’e L. Thornton is an associate in the Atlanta office, where she currently focuses her practice in defending various business entities in general liability and premises liability matters, including negligent security claims, slip and fall cases, and insurance defense litigation matters. Her practice consists of drafting dispositive motions, discovery, pleadings, and conducting depositions. Additionally, she appears in court to argue motions to defend clients on their behalf.
Chlo’e also defends school districts in disciplinary and special education matters. This requires her to represent school districts in disciplinary due process hearings, Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, and 504 Plan meetings. She has also previously defended employers in a variety of workers’ compensation matters.
Prior to joining HBS, Chlo’e practiced foreclosure and bankruptcy law on the creditors’ side, representing national financial institutions including JP Morgan Chase, Capital One, and U.S. Bank in Georgia federal and state courts on various issues, including wrongful foreclosure, dispossessory eviction, title examination, and title curative disputes. She has vast courtroom experience and has solely litigated in numerous bench trials across the State of Georgia.
Her past practice also included project management and litigation of a plethora of replevin claims and consumer debt cases for various financial institutions. This has also required Chlo’e to defend code enforcement violations on foreclosed properties and abandoned motor vehicle claims.
Chlo’e earned her Juris Doctor from the Charleston School of Law, graduating in the top 30% of her class. There, she worked as a law clerk for several nonprofit organizations, including helping to assist in the commencement of Charleston County Magistrate Court: Housing Court, which provided free legal representation for indigent renters. In addition, Chlo’e worked for Charleston Pro Bono, assisting in civil law disputes, and 180 Place Legal Clinic, helping to assist those residing at the shelter with various legal resources. She was the treasurer for If/When/How: Lawyering for Reproductive Justice and the alumni liaison for the Christian Legal Society. She earned her Bachelor of Science from the University of West Georgia and interned full-time with then Chief Superior Court Judge Bemon “Gil” McBride of the Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit.
Chlo’e believes in giving back, especially of her time, by volunteering with various organizations, including her childhood church home in Macon, Georgia, serving as a member of the advisory board and working with the youth ministry. She also volunteers for Habitat for Humanity projects around the state.
