Mariel E. Smith is an associate in the Columbus office of Hall Booth Smith, P.C. Prior to joining the firm, Mrs. Smith was an Assistant District Attorney for the Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit, where she is best known for assistance in the successful prosecution of a twenty-year cold case, regarding a triple homicide. Following law school, Mrs. Smith also served as a law clerk to four of the Superior Court Judges of the Chattahoochee Circuit. She also served as the coordinator for the Mental Health Court during that time. In addition to her work at Hall Booth Smith, P.C., for two years Mrs. Smith served as Associate Magistrate Judge for Muscogee County, and occasionally filled in on the bench for Municipal Court, as well. As Associate Judge, Mrs. Smith presided over criminal first appearance hearings, truancy hearings and warrant applications. She also presided over civil damages suits, involving a wide variety of legal issues. Mrs. Smith is a graduate of the University of Arkansas School of Law where she was the recipient of the Jack Yates Scholarship, served as President of Delta Theta Phi Legal Fraternity and worked as an employment and construction law research assistant.
In the context of education law, Mrs. Smith regularly researches various issues for school board members and administrators. Mrs. Smith recognizes the importance of ensuring that board policies are up-to-date with the constantly changing state and federal education laws. In that regard, Mrs. Smith has drafted and revised many board policies related to governance, students, fiscal management and personnel. Additionally, Mrs. Smith provides representation to school districts and employees in defending and investigating lawsuits involving sexual harassment, discrimination, special education and even motor vehicle collision occurring within the scope of a district employee's job duties.
Mrs. Smith has had the opportunity to defend public and private sector employers and Department of Labor Hearings, write opinion letters regarding suspension and termination procedures and offer guidance in connection with responding to lawsuits involving current and former employees. Mrs. Smith represents insurance companies and their insureds in first party and third party lawsuits. She has experience in all aspects of insurance defense litigation, including providing a defense from the inception of a lawsuit through representing the client at trial.
Mrs. Smith represents a variety of retail establishments, including, but not limited to, restaurants, grocery stores, convenience stores and shopping centers in many different types of actions. These actions include slip and fall actions, as well as representation in employment-related matters.
