HBS Adds James T. McColgan, III in Memphis
MEMPHIS, TN – February 28, 2022 – Hall Booth Smith, P.C. (HBS) is pleased to welcome seasoned Memphis attorney James T. McColgan, III as Of Counsel to its Memphis office.
Jim brings three decades of legal experience in the fields of healthcare liability defense, including pre-suit investigation, litigation and jury trials. Jim also has vast experience doing appellate work. He vehemently protects the interests of urgent care clinics, physicians (including numerous medical specialists), Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, nurse practitioners, risk management professionals, physician groups, medical administrative staff, and other healthcare professionals in complex and potentially high-exposure litigation in state and federal courts in Tennessee and Mississippi. He works closely with clients to establish best practices and minimize the risk of litigation and reduce liability. He also conducts training seminars, risk management courses and Continuing Legal Education classes.
When claims occur, Jim analyzes potential exposure and damages and the merits of the case to determine the most effective and efficient strategy for protecting the interests of the provider(s). He also represents clients on appeal to safeguard a hard-won victory or overturn an unfavorable outcome. Jim has several published appellate decisions, and he has tried approximately 50 jury trials.
Before joining HBS, Jim owned and was managing partner of a boutique litigation defense firm in Memphis for about 15 years. Earlier in his career, Jim prosecuted criminal cases for the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Attorney in the Eastern District of North Carolina. He served honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps for 14 years as an Infantry Officer and Judge Advocate.
Jim earned a J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of Mississippi School of Law. He also completed a Bachelor of Engineering degree at the University of Mississippi.
“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Jim to our Memphis team! He is an amazing trial attorney who brings decades of remarkable experience in successfully protecting the interests of healthcare providers in Tennessee and Mississippi. He is an excellent addition to HBS and will help us to continue to serve our clients with excellence,” said Jennifer Harrison, a Partner who oversees the HBS Memphis office.
