Jim Standard Rectangle Atlanta Attorney
Hall Booth Smith, P.C. (HBS) is pleased to welcome James “Jim” Standard back to the firm as Of Counsel in its Atlanta office. With more than 28 years of legal experience, Jim brings extensive knowledge in business transactions, corporate and partnership matters, mergers and acquisitions, tax, and business litigation, further strengthening the firm’s ability to serve clients with complex business and legal needs.

“We are delighted to welcome Jim back,” said Alex H. Booth, Managing Partner of HBS. “Having previously spent more than a decade with our firm, Jim knows our people, our clients, and our commitment to exceptional service. His extensive experience in corporate transactions, business litigation, and tax matters will be a tremendous asset to our clients as they navigate complex business decisions and opportunities. We look forward to having him as part of our team once again.”

During his previous tenure with HBS, Jim led the firm’s transactional and business litigation practice group and served on its management committee. His practice included representing companies in mergers and acquisitions, reorganizations, divestitures, financing arrangements, and corporate governance matters, as well as advising on shareholder agreements, franchise agreements, employment agreements, and restrictive covenants.

Throughout his career, Jim has represented businesses across numerous industries, including transportation and logistics, manufacturing, financial services, health care, telecommunications, and environmental services. His experience includes structuring joint ventures and tax-efficient reorganizations, negotiating commercial agreements, advising on executive compensation, and representing companies in sales to private equity firms.

His representative matters include advising an investment fund on the acquisition of agribusiness and farming operations valued at more than $60 million, representing a manufacturing company in securing a $24 million credit facility, and assisting an international financial services firm with an acquisition supporting its entry into the U.S. market.

In addition to his transactional practice, Jim has substantial experience in business litigation and tax controversies, including shareholder disputes, director and officer liability, restrictive covenants, trade secret misappropriation, and contractual disputes. His litigation background provides valuable insight into identifying potential risks and protecting clients’ interests when structuring transactions and negotiating agreements.

Jim earned his Master of Laws in Taxation from New York University School of Law, a Master of Science in Finance and a Master of Business Administration from Georgia State University’s J. Mack Robinson College of Business, and his Juris Doctor, magna cum laude, from Georgia State University College of Law. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Washington University in St. Louis.
