Joan C. Foy
Biography
Joan Foy is Of Counsel in Hall Booth Smith’s Tampa office, where she focuses her practice on aging services, health care, medical malpractice, general liability and premises liability litigation. Drawing on decades of experience in both health care operations and legal practice, Joan provides strategic counsel and defense to health care providers, particularly those serving the long-term care industry.
Born and raised in the Bronx, New York, Joan began her career serving the senior community as a social worker before becoming a licensed Nursing Home Administrator and Certified Assisted Living Facility Director in Florida. Her firsthand experience managing skilled nursing and assisted living facilities gives her a unique understanding of the operational, regulatory and legal challenges facing health care providers. Inspired by her commitment to the long-term care industry, Joan attended law school with the goal of defending the providers dedicated to caring for older adults, a mission that continues to define her practice today.
Joan represents skilled nursing facilities, assisted living facilities, hospitals, rehabilitation centers and other health care providers in medical malpractice, regulatory, general liability and premises liability matters. She handles all phases of litigation, including case evaluation, discovery, depositions, motion practice and trial preparation. In addition to litigation, Joan counsels clients on regulatory compliance, risk management, health care policies and procedures, and state and federal regulatory requirements.
Prior to joining Hall Booth Smith, Joan practiced health care and long-term care defense at firms serving providers throughout Florida and Nevada. She also held leadership positions in health care quality, risk management and compliance, overseeing regulatory surveys, patient safety initiatives, quality improvement programs and health care compliance efforts. Her experience working directly within health care organizations allows her to provide clients with practical, business-minded legal guidance that extends beyond the courtroom.
Joan is Certified in Health Care Compliance (CHC), and her background as both a health care administrator and attorney enables her to understand her clients’ challenges from multiple perspectives.
Joan earned her Juris Doctor from St. Thomas University School of Law. She also holds a Master of Health Services Administration from Florida International University and a Bachelor of Arts from New York University. In addition to her legal credentials, she is a Licensed Florida Nursing Home Administrator, a Certified Assisted Living Facility Director and is proficient in Spanish.
