Philip F. Mattia
Biography
Philip F. Mattia is a Partner in our office in Paramus, New Jersey, and he has more than four decades of litigation experience and specializes in defending the riskiest high-exposure cases. He has tried more than 200 cases to conclusion, and is often invited to speak at medical-legal conferences and educational seminars.
Philip protects the rights of health care systems, hospitals, urgent care centers, physicians, nurses, physical therapists, chiropractors, and other health care professionals in complex medical malpractice lawsuits. He has handled countless trials and obtained numerous successful verdicts and judgments for his clients as he works closely to set litigation strategy and manage risk in alignment with organizational goals. In addition, Philip has been appointed to the Supreme Court Committee on Character and has served as Acting Chair.
He also represents clients before the New Jersey Board of Medical Examiners, New Jersey Board of Nursing, New Jersey Board of Psychological Examiners, insurance company credentialing panels, and hospital medical review panels and investigating committees. He also represents insured physicians as personal counsel.
Before joining Hall Booth Smith, Philip was the President and Co-founder of his own boutique medical malpractice litigation firm in Fairfield, New Jersey, and owned other small litigation practices for several decades.
At the start of his career, Philip clerked for the Hon. James R. Guiliano, A.J.S.C., of the New Jersey Superior Court. He served as Deputy Attorney General in the Office of the Attorney General of New Jersey for five years and handled major litigation at trial and appeal, including successfully arguing a landmark eminent domain case before the New Jersey Supreme Court.
Philip earned a Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan. He also completed a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Philosophy and graduating magna cum laude, from Drew University in Madison, New Jersey.
