“College Football Coach Brings Game Day Experience Out of Stadium, Into Senior Living,” McKnight’s Senior Living
Overview
McKnight’s Senior Living has published an article by Laura Hall discussed Legacy Village of Stillwater’s successful weekly program called “Gundy Mondays.” While the future of the program remains to be seen following his recent termination, former Oklahoma State head football coach Mike Gundy has long broadcasted a weekly radio show from the senior living community, drawing nearly 100 residents.
Hall interviewed Dave Egbert for the article, a veteran executive director of senior living communities who is now vice president of senior living operations for Utah-based Western States Lodging Management. Together, they discussed how the popular initiative connected seniors with local college athletics to break stereotypes about senior living, such as “the barrier that we have in our minds that senior living is only about bingo, Bible study and birthday clubs.”
Egbert added that the company’s communities near college campuses in other states have started to imagine their own programs, thinking about experiences for residents who still have so much life left to live and so much learning to do. “They have so much energy and so much to give back,” Egbert said.
Exposure to universities also could help with staff recruitment in senior living. Egbert noted that only 15 students were in his graduating class for a master’s degree in geriatric care management. “It’s not a field that initially brings a lot of excitement and interest from the student population,” Egbert explained. “But when a program like Coach Gundy’s gets publicity — or just when he brings some of his players, who are also students, during his shows – it opens up that barrier between young students and the potential of senior living as a career.”
