How I Founded a Law Firm: ‘Build a Structure That Can Grow Beyond You’
“How I Founded a Law Firm: ‘Build a Structure That Can Grow Beyond You,’ Says John Hall Jr. of Hall Booth Smith,” Law.com
In a recent Q&A published by Law.com, John E. Hall, Jr., Founding Partner of Hall Booth Smith, P.C., reflected on his four-decade career in litigation defense — from a boutique Atlanta firm in 1984 to building one of the Southeast’s most expansive legal platforms, now home to more than 420 attorneys across 30+ offices in 13 states.
Hall traced the firm’s evolution through a pivotal 1998 strategic shift that moved the practice away from individual profitability toward a collaborative, growth-oriented model. “What could have been a setback became a catalyst,” he noted, describing how the loss of a major client accelerated the firm’s expansion rather than slowing it down.
On technology, Hall drew a striking parallel: “I often compare [AI] to the automobile in the late nineteenth century. Its full impact has yet to be realized, but its potential is transformative.” He emphasized that the firm invests heavily in technology — including data center infrastructure — to work faster, think more deeply, and serve clients more effectively, while ensuring that innovation is implemented with discipline and responsibility.
Hall also spoke candidly about leadership, warning against two extremes that derail leaders: a lack of confidence that prevents decisive action, and arrogance that shuts out feedback. Effective leadership, he said, means meeting people where they are and helping them contribute at their highest level.
Reflecting on the profession’s future, Hall acknowledged the risks of excessive capital influence and a “profit-at-all-costs” mentality, but he remained optimistic. His advice was direct: “Do excellent work. Serve clients well. Uphold professional values.”
Hall also highlighted two recent publications he developed with colleagues — Reviving Fairness: Defending Healthcare Heroes and Aging, Accusations, and Accountability: Defending the Front Lines of Elder Care — as part of a broader commitment to defense advocacy in health care and senior care.
