Alex R. Williams
Biography
Alex R. Williams is Of Counsel in the firm’s Raleigh office and concentrates his practice in governmental liability, correctional health care, and general liability, representing state agencies, public officials, law enforcement officers, correctional professionals, and medical providers in complex civil litigation.
Alex brings more than 15 years of litigation experience in state and federal courts across North Carolina. He has independently handled hundreds of civil cases involving correctional institutions and state investigative agencies, and their employees. His experience includes defending claims of wrongful death, excessive force, malicious prosecution, wrongful conviction, and various other alleged constitutional violations, as well as representing medical professionals in deliberate indifference and correctional health care matters. He is experienced in defending claims brought under 42 U.S.C. § 1983 and regularly litigates issues involving sovereign, governmental, and qualified immunity.
Over the course of his career, Alex has tried cases in all three of North Carolina’s federal districts, achieving favorable outcomes in the vast majority of those matters, and has handled multiple appeals before the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, including cases resulting in oral argument. While he enjoys jury trials, he understands that the realities of our legal system often require cases to settle. Given his experience, he can assess a case’s chances of success and then appropriately tailor a case-specific litigation strategy.
In addition to his courtroom experience, Alex has advised agency clients on policy matters and risk management strategies, providing practical guidance designed to mitigate exposure and strengthen institutional practices. His background representing government entities gives him a comprehensive understanding of the operational and legal challenges faced by public institutions and their personnel.
Alex earned his Juris Doctor from the Appalachian School of Law, where he served as Associate Editor of the Appalachian Journal of Law. He received his Bachelor of Arts degrees in Political Science and Criminology from North Carolina State University.
