Biography

Daniel D. Derner is an associate in our Nashville office where he focuses on transportation, medical malpractice, and premises liability matters.

Prior to joining HBS, Dan worked as a deployable field counsel for FEMA, providing legal advice to field leadership on FEMA’s statutory authorities and other federal regulations in declared disaster areas. He also has a rich history of serving as a judge advocate in the U.S. Army and U.S. Coast Guard for over 20 years. During that time, he served in multiple leadership roles, advising commanders on military justice, administrative law, fiscal law, and ethics while in garrison and deployed overseas. Before he entered military service, Dan was a prosecutor for the State of Minnesota in both adult and juvenile courts.

Dan earned his Juris Doctor, cum laude, from the Mitchell Hamline School of Law, where he was an editor of The Mitchell Hamline Law Review. He also earned a Master of Laws from the Judge Advocate General’s Legal Center and School. Dan earned his Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, in Political Science and Speech Communication from Gustavus Adolphus College.
