Nashville Derner Smythe Tennison

HBS Nashville is thrilled to welcome Attorneys Daniel D. Derner, Gage C. Smythe, and Paul E. Tennison to its team.

Attorney Backgrounds

Daniel D. Derner

Daniel focuses on transportation, medical malpractice, and premises liability matters. Prior to joining HBS, he worked as a deployable field counsel for FEMA, providing legal advice to field leadership on FEMA’s statutory authorities and other federal regulations in declared disaster areas. He also has a rich history of serving as a judge advocate in the U.S. Army and U.S. Coast Guard for over 20 years. During that time, he served in multiple leadership roles, advising commanders on military justice, administrative law, fiscal law, and ethics while in garrison and deployed overseas. Before he entered military service, Dan was a prosecutor for the State of Minnesota in both adult and juvenile courts.

Gage C. Smythe

Gage’s practice focuses on construction, general liability, medical malpractice, and professional malpractice and ethics matters. Prior to joining HBS, he spent nearly three years representing clients in all stages of litigation at a local firm, specializing in medical malpractice, construction, and general liability cases. Additionally, Gage has successfully handled complex insurance coverage cases on behalf of insurance clients.

Paul E. Tennison

Paul practices in aging services, appellate, arbitration and mediation, business litigation, construction, general liability, health care, medical malpractice, premises liability, products liability, professional malpractice and ethics, and transportation matters. Recently, he was selected to the Super Lawyers Rising Stars list. Prior to joining HBS, he  worked as a senior associate attorney with a broad civil litigation practice which included representing individuals and businesses in commercial or breach of contract disputes, family law disputes, defamation, and military law matters. He defended clients in all phases of litigation, from inception through discovery, motion practice, settlement negotiations, trials, and appeals.
